Black Love: Picture Perfect Chocolate Couples
There aren’t many things sweeter than black love…
Sterling K. Brown & Ryan Michelle Bathe
These college sweethearts met at Stanford University in 1998 and have two sons together. Sterling says the secret to their healthy marriage is that “We have a community that supports us. And one thing that I’ve learned for any relationship to be successful is the people who are part of your life, they have to champion your union," he explained. "Not just you, not just her. They have to champion y’all. And we’re very thankful to have a community that champions us."
Ciara & Russell Wilson
Everybody wants to get their hands on the prayer Ciara prayed for Russell! This beautiful couple has been giving us #relationshipgoals since they first met. Ciara released her new single Greatest Love earlier this week dedicated to her hubby, and the two shared sweet messages on Instagram with reasons why they loved each other. Michelle & Barack Obama
Oh, how we miss our forever President and First Lady … Remember what it was like seeing real love in the White House? Take us back! Michelle and Barack have been going strong since ‘89, and on their 25th wedding anniversary in 2017, Michelle tweeted “Happy 25th anniversary @barackobama. A quarter of a century later, you're still my best friend & the most extraordinary man I know. I <3 you.”
Idris Elba & Sabrina Dhowre
This announcement broke millions of hearts, but Idris Elba is officially off the market! It seemed as though Idris was on the path of eternal bachelorhood, but Sabrina Dhowre swooped in with different plans. Idris put a ring on it in February 2018, a year after they began dating. He reportedly planned on popping the question on Valentine’s Day, but changed his mind and went for it at a screening of Yardie instead. “It was a little spontaneous, if I’m honest,” he said. “I was at a cast and crew screening and among people I loved. We had all worked so hard for this project so I was like I’m doing it right now, here, today.” You know what they say — when you know, you know!
Ms. Tina & Richard Lawson
It’s never too late to find love! Take it from Ms. Tina Lawson, who found love again at 60 years old with actor Richard Lawson, and the two have been sharing their love with us ever since. According to Ms. Tina, it was her granddaughter Blue Ivy Carter that inspired the two to tie the knot. "My daughter gave me, for my sixtieth birthday, this boat trip… We called it the love boat, and we just kind of rekindled relationships. So we were in that romantic space… And then, after that, I went on a boat with Beyoncé and Jay and Blue and some other friends, and one night we came down and Blue said, ‘Oh y’all look beautiful. When are y’all getting married?’ I think she was about three.” Straight to the point, Blue!
Lena Waithe & Alana Mayo
Lena Waithe made history in 2017 when she became the first Black woman to win the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and has been seeing blessings on blessings on blessings ever since. One of those blessings is fiancée, Alana Mayo. The couple hasn’t shared a date with us for their wedding yet, but Lena says “I think it’ll be pretty fly. She’s pretty fly. It’ll be small and intimate, honestly, but she’s also like a black Audrey Hepburn; she’s old school classic, and I know I have a bit more of a swaggier style, so we complement each other really well. It’ll be something small, intimate and very personal.”
Chanel Iman & Sterling Shepard
Victoria’s Secret model Chanel Iman and NFL wide receiver Sterling Shepard met in 2016 at a birthday party for former New York Giants star Victor Cruz and began dating soon after. The two tied the knot in March of 2018, just four months after their romantic waterfront engagement and welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world in August. Chanel shared a picture of the three of them in a hospital bed on Instagram, with the caption "You were worth every push[,] every contraction! Welcome to our world @caliclayshepard[.] Love mommy and daddy @sterl_shep3.”
Remy Ma & Papoose
Lovebirds Remy Ma and Papoose have been together for 13 years, six of which rapper Remy Ma was behind bars for assault, illegal weapon possession and attempted coercion after pleading guilty to a shooting. And guess who was there, holding her down through it all? Her husband, rapper Papoose. Papoose goes HARD for his wife! During her six year stint, Remy says Papoose came to visit her almost every day. "That's right. In a marriage you get a visit 8:30 in the morning until 3:30, Monday through Friday. Then your weekends alternate. And he was there. If you saw my first year, every single day, Monday [through] Friday — canceling whatever he had to do for shows and interviews — he was staying in that prison with me from 8:30 in the morning to 3:30. Then we'd stay on the phone until 5 or 5:30 until lock-in," Remy Ma recalled. "It was crazy looking back at it now because I just had to tell him one time, like, 'Yo, you can't stay here every day with me.' I think he kinda felt, 'Well, as long as you're here, we're both here.'" The couple welcomed their first child together, “The Golden Child,” in December.
